Business Tax and the Small Business

When you start your own business, you may or may not have done your research on business taxes, tracking expenses and income and your business assets. Depending on the type of business you run, your business planning should include tax planning for business tax. Even the smallest businesses selling items to consumers must pay business tax.

If you are a really small business, and you don’t generate much revenue, you may not need to file quarterly sales tax forms – annual business tax filing may be just fine for you! Still, you need to know the requirements of your particular state and how you will be required to track and report business taxes for the federal government.

Keeping books as you complete transactions is always easier than reconstructing your records at the end of a quarter or year. A simple accounting software package is not expensive and will pay you back in convenience and organization.

At the end of the year or quarter, your reporting will be much easier if you use one of these systems. Your local office equipment store has several options or you can order a small business accounting software package on the internet. While you are at it, don’t forget to include your expenses for the purchase of business assets like equipment. As you buy equipment to support your new business, remember to enter the expense in your accounting financial software package.

As your business planning matures, you can use the information in your historic expense and revenue records to track your growth, look for patterns or issues in your financial statement and plan for investment in new business assets or markets.

Whatever you do, don’t try to avoid the tax man! Business taxes are a fact of life and it is always better to be organized and prepared with complete records just in case you get audited. At the very least, your preparation and organization will get you through tax season more quickly and with fewer headaches.
